Welcome to rachelsays... The blog of Rachel Lewis, containing my thoughts and musings on illustration, design, fashion, music, cakey-bakey goodness, culture and things that I generally find cool. There's also a good chance my own illustration work will pop up on here.

All work on this blog is copyright to me unless I state that it isn't. Obviously. Don't do stealing, kids.

Nonsensical Spam Project: Universal Truth

I've been getting more and more nonsensical spam now, which has given me much amusement. The latest comment I got was on This post, scroll down to read it. It literally had me LOL-ing, it's so ridiculous and yet faintly logical. This is the comment:

"The author of rachellewisillustration.blogspot.com has written an excellent article. You have made your point and there is not much to argue about. It is like the following universal truth that you can not argue with: eternal love lasts about three months Thanks for the info."
An oxymoron if I ever heard one, but quite possibly... true.

Click for larger.

So this is the illustration to accompany it. I felt the need to go slightly surreal on this one, with a sense of narrative behind it. The rabbit is actually taken from one of my photographs of New York from 2008, you can see it on this post.

It makes me feel a bit sad, and I like that.

British Grand Prix 2009: Friday Practice

Well I had an awesome weekend, as you know, I'm a huge fan of Formula 1, so it was so amazing of my parents to take me to the Friday Practice sessions of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone last friday, 19th June. Had such a great day! It was a shame we couldn't afford the saturday qualifyers or the race on sunday, but I have 0 moneys (hooray for graduating in a recession) and my parents are in roughly the same boat as they've had paycuts and all that jazz. So we had to watch it on telly. Anyway; friday was still a treat and we got to see all the cars and drivers and a bit of GP2 and Formula Renault and Formula BMW too.

It was ridiculously loud.

You really don't appreciate it on the telly, but the roar of those engines are deafening. And they do this strange little pop when they gear shift which you don't hear on telly too.

My camera is 7mp and not great... so I was pleasantly surprised by the clarity of these:

No idea if that's Hammy or Kovaleinen; can't really see the colour of the helmet from here.

That's Button 'cos he's got the red bit on the top. This was in the last 10 minutes of the second practice session, Webber clipped a curb or something and his car just died. So he took a (slightly annoyed) walk through the crowd, which was nice. Can you see him? Next to the guy with the stupid Union Jack shorts.

The actual race on sunday was good and I'm glad Vettel won - he's such a happy guy, I can't begrudge him (even if he is German...) :P
Webber did well to get 2nd too, I really hope he wins soon, he definitely deserves it.
Tough luck to Button though, would have been so good if he won this weekend - wasn't to be though, 6th for him. And Hamilton continues his terrible run with another non-scoring place. I feel bad for him actually, he does try so hard. Maybe next year they'll give him a half decent car again.

Aside from that, I just chilled out at home with the 'rents, came back to Wolves last night and started my new admin job today! First day went well :)

The painting of our degree show and silly times.

The past 2 days we've been in uni painting all the boards for our Degree Show which starts end of next week. Manual labour is hard. Pratting about with white paint is fun.

Carina seems a bit too happy... paint fumes may be to blame!
I got splattered in silly tiny specks of paint. I was not amused.
It was also Jenny's birthday today! Which made it extra fun, I bought this amazing giant cupcake for her, which we ate with glee:
Yes, we used some kind of scraggy storage box for a table. We ain't got no furniturrrrr.

Me and Jenny. We like cake. Mmmm.
Yeah, I thought being an art student, I should get a bit arty with a photo. Er. I wouldn't call this award-winning.
Illustration girls! From left to right, Danielle, Kim, Jenny, Carina, Me. (I also want to point out, we are a much more stylish bunch usually, but we didn't want paint on our Dior, darling*, so we turned up in Primarni)
*None of us own any Dior. Gutter.I couldn't resist doing that.

I've linked where I can to websites.. some aren't functional yet. But we're all very talented so what those spaces....

I'm visiting the parents over the weekend so probably no posting. Have a sunny, great weekend! :D

A drawing a day: Day 2

So, I haven't had time to do a drawing a day, which is a bit of a fail considering I only started a few days ago! But I've been so busy with fun in the sun, job interviews, degree show preparation, all sorts.

So today I decided to draw whatever fell out of my bag after getting back from my interview. And my phone, which is on charge constantly these days because it's old and rubbish. (well, it's a year old, but phones really don't last long at all, it's terrible). I'll draw again tomorrow.

Here are a few pictures from my day at Barmouth, Wales yesterday with my friends:

And my cool neon pink flipflops! :)
